About Paphos
Paphos is one of the most beautiful and historic towns in Cyprus. In ancient times, Paphos was the capital of Cyprus and is entwined with Greek mythology, and the legendary birth of Aphrodite on her shores brought fame and worshippers there to follow the cult of the Goddess. Landmarks associated with Aphrodite are the chunky, rugged rocks of her beautiful birthshore known as the Aphrodite Rocks or "Petra tou Romiou", the evocative sanctuary of Aphrodite at Kouklia Village, one-time shrine and scene of pagan festivals for thousands, the Baths of Aphrodite at Polis, supposed source of fertility and the Fountain of Love, or Fontana Amorosa, a few miles further into the Akamas Peninsula who according to legend arose from the sea close to this beautiful spot.Even the town's name is linked to the Goddess, for Pafos was the name of the mythological daughter of Venus and Pygmalion.Paphos has much to offer the visitor. Whether you are in search of history, water-sports, good food, or just a relaxing spell on the beach, Paphos and its surroundings have it all! Today, the heart of Paphos is the delightful fishing harbour near the Fort, lined with tavernas offering a mouth-watering selection of the day's catch, as well as numerous bars and shops. There are several beaches within Paphos itself, but the best beach in the vicinity is Coral Bay, which is a short drive or bus-ride away. If you're feeling energetic, you can go jet-skiing, paragliding or water-skiing. You can also enjoy fishing, scuba-diving, hiking, cycling and horse riding. The whole area of Paphos abounds in historical andarchaeological treasures.
